October 2013 Portland Antique & Collectible Expo Show Photos

Yesterday I attended the October Portland Antique & Collectible Show out at the Expo Center. I always enjoy attending the show, taking photos, and talking to the dealers and buyers that I know.

Posted below are some of my favorite picks for fun, beautiful and wacky items. These are just a few examples of the myriad items that are for sale at the show (sorry, the dogs and humans aren't for sale)...

Pinkham Millinery Book Release Party & Fashion Show

Last Saturday night I attended a book release party and millinery fashion show at Pinkham Millinery. The party celebrated the release of Couture Hats: From the Outrageous to the Refined a book which features Pinkham's designs. There was also a fashion show covering 30 years of her gorgeous couture hats, including hats that are featured in the book.

I met lots of nice and stylish people.
Check them out (for more pics from the show click here)...

Cousins, Emily and Olivia, dropped by my booth all three days of the show. Each day they had different cute vintage ensembles on. They were so sweet and looked so cute in their dresses. On the last day of the show they each brought me a bouquet of lavender. What sweethearts...

The Farm Chicks Show 2009

This past weekend my husband Chris and I made a quick trip up to Spokane, Washington for The Farm Chicks Show. We arrived on Saturday evening, went out for dinner and then met up with Maggie of DeniseBrain and her husband John for a drink at the bar in the basement of our hotel. I was delighted to meet Maggie, and Chris and I really enjoyed getting to know her and John. Sunday morning we had breakfast and then wandered around near our hotel and took photos of old signs and buildings. We had lunch at a diner located inside of an old train car. I then headed off to The Farm Chicks Show while my husband went off to the museum and the local gardens. I only had about three or four hours to explore The Farm Chicks Show- but, in that time I was able to hit all of the booths, take photos and chat with people.
To see photos that we took of Spokane's vintage neon signs and architecture click here, to check out photos that we took of Spokane's grand Davenport Hotel click here.

Farm Chicks Antique Show Wrap-Up

On Wednesday of last week I was visiting the blog Magpie Ethel where the author Laurie mentioned The Farm Chicks Antique Show, I had never heard of it before so I headed over to The Farm Chicks website, read about it, and checked out photos of the vendors. By Thursday morning I was convinced that I had to go! Usually, I am not one to get incredibly strong urges- but, something about the beauty, fun and relaxed atmosphere of the show was beaconing me North. I contemplated various different ways to get up there...taking the train (which would have arrived at midnight), asking friends if they wanted to caravan up there, or seeing if my husband was willing to drive us up. I mentioned it to my husband when I talked to him at lunchtime and he told me he had to think about it. So, I waited until he got home for his answer, which happily turned out to be yes, he would drive up there!
We arrived in Spokane on Saturday after about a six hour drive and my husband dropped me off at the fairgrounds where The Farm Chicks Antique Show was taking place. I immediately went into the silo part of the pavilion
to meet Tisha Leung and Monica Willis, a pair of editors from Country Living magazine and also ended up meeting Serena, one of The Farm Chicks, as well. They were all very nice ladies! After that I began my journey through the show. I was impressed by the quality of the displays at the booths and also by the incredibly reasonable prices (most booths had vintage and antique merchandise that was marked a third to half of what it would be on-line or in Portland). I met and talked with lots of nice dealers and shoppers. My husband picked me up from the show at closing time. We then drove around to various locales in Spokane which featured vintage signs, architecture and road side attractions.
On Sunday morning we went to Spokane's Riverfront Park, which is where the 1974 World's Fair took place, and visited the huge Radio Flyer Wagon slide. Afterwards we had breakfast at Knight's Diner which is located inside of an old Pullman railroad car. Then we headed back over to the fairgrounds where my husband dropped me off at The Farm Chicks Antique Show, and I finished wandering around to all of the beautiful booths. As I wrapped up my wandering about, the last booth that I visited was that of EllynAnne Geisel, the wonderful author of The Apron Book: Making, Wearing and Sharing a Bit of Cloth and Comfort.

*Coming soon- a book give away featuring some of EllynAnne's books*
**In August look for The Style Council Interview with Farm Chick co-founder Serena**

Posted below are photos that I took at the show. Head over to my other blog Shop Vintage Portland to check out quirky photos that I took around Spokane and Yakima.

Portland Expo Is This Weekend!

Expophoto2

The Palmer Wirfs Antique & Collectible Show is this weekend at The Portland Expo Center. If you haven't been to one of their shows before I would highly recommend that you go and check it out! There are 1,350 booths of jewelry, clothing, linens, sewing, toys, ephemera, pottery, furniture, vintage posters, mid-century modern, deco...almost anything you can imagine or would want to collect!
The hours are 9-6 on Saturday March 4th and 10-5 on Sunday March 5th. It's always hard to know which day to go on. If you go on Saturday you get a better selection of items. But, Sunday is good because the dealers often have sales or are up for bargaining.
It's good to go to the show knowing what sort of items you are interested in looking for. Otherwise the show can be daunting and overwhelming to one's senses. When I go to the show I walk down each aisle scanning every booth as I pass by to see if there is anything of interest to me. It takes me about 2-3 hours to cover the entire show. Whereas my mom stops at every booth and it takes her all day to get through one or two of the buildings.
Remember to wear comfortable shoes. It is also a good idea to bring a notepad along to jot down notes about items that you saw and that you may want to come back for. A measuring tape is also handy for measuring furniture and to see if clothing will fit you (A lot of dealers will allow you to take clothing to the restroom to try on). And when you get tired and need a pick me up stop by the Wild Sweets Factory and pick up some delicous walnut fudge!
