TCM Classic Film Festival 2012 Wrap Up

DSC_0312

I was exhilarated by the TCM Classic Film Festival. During our stay in L.A. I was getting only four to five hours of sleep a night but, I was riding on a wave of adrenaline from the film festival. My fullest day of movie watching was Saturday when I watched movies from 9:30 in the morning until 11:00 at night.

I have never before experienced anything like the TCM Classic Film Festival. The sense of camaraderie at the festival was incredible. Whether waiting in line to get into the theaters or sitting in the theater before the movie started it was inevitable to strike up a conversation with whomever was next to you. Everyone was very enthusiastic about the movies and the festival. Most of the people that I met had flown in from the East Coast or from the South for the festival. People who were attending the films were going to those particular movies because they were genuinely interested in them. It's not like seeing movies that are currently showing where a lot of people go because of the hype or from a friend's recommendation. The people attending the movies at the festival were going because they had never seen it before on the big screen, because it was their favorite movie, or had their favorite actor in it, etc...

Fashionable Attendees of The Turner Classic Film Festival 2012

During the 2012 Turner Classic Film Festival I took photos of fashionable festival attendees.

For the World Premiere Restoration of Cabaret shown at the Grauman's Chinese Theatre certain TCM passholders were able to walk the red carpet before the movie began. The emcee would encourage the people in the stands to clap as the red carpet passholders walked by and the emcee would ask the attendees where they were from. I love that TCM does this, it makes everyday people feel like celebrities. As you can see from the photos posted below a lot of people truly did deserve the star treatment for their style...

Lulu's Coverage of A Trip To The Moon and Beyond, Charade, The Women, and Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House at The 2012 TCM Classic Film Festival Sunday, April 15

Posted below are my reviews and summaries of movies that I watched on Sunday, April 15th at the TCM Classic Film Festival 2012.

A Trip To The Moon and Beyond at 9:45 at The Egyptian Theatre

A trip to the moon

Presented by Serge Bromberg

Lobster Film's Serge Bromberg searches for films in attics and basements. He said that more than half of the films made are missing, that 5 or 10 out of 100 cans of films he discovers are worth watching, he said that it's the same ratio as with today's movies. He stated that the problem isn't necessarily restoring the film but restoring the audience.

Serge was very charming and enjoyable to listen to.

Serge showed several other silent movies before A Trip To The Moon. He accompanied all the movies other than A Trip To The Moon with piano.

* A Trip Down Market Street a seven minute film traveling down San Francisco's Market Street in April 1906, just days before the city was destroyed.

* A film taken after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire.

*A Butterfly's Metamorphosis from 1904 in which each frame was handcolored.

*The Acrobatic Fly from 1907 featuring microscopic filming of a fly.

* Revenge of the Butterfly from 1906.

* Flirting on the Train from 1902.

* After the Ball from the 1890's featuring a striptease and shower scene. It's incredible to see how many layers of underclothes she takes off.

* A Trip to Japan from 1905. Serge's sister recreated the original hand painted color palette for this film.

* Caruso from 1907. Actually an actor (a plumber in real life) who resembles Caruso singing.

* Love Nest a Buster Keaton movie from 1923. One of my favorite scenes from this movie was Buster sealing an envelope that contains a letter for his ex-fiance with his tears.

* A Trip To The Moon from 1902.

Serge said that this was the Avatar of it's day. Of Melies he said that he was an illusionist, a wizard. They chose Air to do the soundtrack in the hope that younger audiences would be interested in the music and then they would want to see the movie.

Lulu's Review

The movie looked amazing with the tinting and restoration. It was much easier to differentiate what things were (aliens versus backgrounds) in this restored version than in the black and white version. The AIR soundtrack was perfect for the film adding a great pace and energy to the movie.

Charade at 12:15 at The Egyptian Theatre

Charade

Lulu's Review

This movie features cool opening credits as well as a catchy and suspenseful soundtrack. The footage of the stamp show is fun. The movie has a suspenseful ending.

Menacing Bad Guys: 9

The Women at 3:30 at The Egyptian Theatre

The women

To purchase The Women click here

Introduced by Todd Oldham & Cari Beauchamp

Todd said that it's a total beauty bath, like it was made on another planet. The insanity of a 20 minute fashion show in the middle of the film, it's like the intermission you don't pee in.

Lulu's Review

Adrian was the designer for this movie. The hats worn throughout the movie are tons of fun featuring veiling and flowers, some of the hats looks as though they were made of clear plastic cups. The fashion show has lots of great designs. There are a few Surrealist inspired garments including unusual details like eyes and hands. Joan Crawford has an elaborate bathtub that is clear with swan detail. The movie cast is stellar.

Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House at 6:45 at the Chinese Multiplex

Mr blandings

To purchase Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House click here

Introduced by Matt Tyrnauer

Matt Tyrnauer says that this is one of the few movies about urban planning. At the time that the movie was made it was becoming popular to build dream houses outside of the city, moving to the suburbs. You can actually visit the house from the movie it was built in Malibu and it's now part of the Malibu Creek State Park.

Lulu's Coverage of Auntie Mame, Snow White And The Seven Dwarves, Girl Shy, Singin' In The Rain, Call Her Savage, and Todd Oldham at The 2012 TCM Classic Film Festival Saturday, April 14

Posted below are my reviews and summaries of movies that I watched on Saturday, April 14th at the TCM Classic Film Festival 2012.

Auntie Mame was shown at 9:30 at The Egyptian Theatre

Auntie mame tcm

Click here to purchase Auntie Mame

Introduced by Todd Oldham

Todd noted that the aspect ratio is different on tv than on the big screen so you literally see more of the movie.

He says of the movie that it is a rich treasure, he gets to the end of the film and he feels happier. He says that Auntie Mame has huge kindness in her heart.

Lulu's Review

This is one of my favorite movies! The story, the characters, the interiors, the fashions- everything is fabulous! I have watched this movie before on the small screen and I have read the book (it's hilarious, it had me laughing out loud- which rarely does a book make me do) this was my first time seeing the movie on the big screen.

Auntie Mame cycles through a lot of different interior design styles throughout the movie. Starting with Asian decor, she works her way through Danish modern with a Calder-esque mobile and a goldfish bowl light fixture and ends with an Indian/Tibetan inspired interior.

The movie spans a wide range of time. Through the passing of time the costume styles change- but, they all have a 1950's fashion influence to them featuring a lot of wide skirts, even if that wasn't supposed to be the style of the eras being portrayed.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves at 1:00 at Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

Snow_White_Dwarfs_1937_1

Photo courtesy of Photofest and TCM

Introduced by Ginnifer Goodwin & Leonard Maltin

Marge Champion, who when she was a  girl, was the movement model for Snow White was in the audience.

Ginnifer noted that we are all flawed, we aren't Snow White.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was Walt Disney's first feature length film.

Before Snow White and the Seven Dwarves originally premiered they had the songs from the movie playing on the radio, and you could buy the sheet music.

Lulu's Review

Ever since childhood this has been my favorite Disney movie. The movie features catchy songs that will get stuck in your head for days. I love the gorgeous backgrounds in the movie. Unfortunately with the restoration of the movie some of the characters, especially the prince's color palette seem really blocky with no nuances or flowing shades of color.

You can see the 1930's influence on Snow White and the Wicked Witches costumes- it's like 1930's meets the Renaissance.

Girl Shy was shown at 4:15 at The Egyptian Theatre with live musical accompaniment by The Robert Israel Orchestra

Girl shy

Introduced by Leonard Maltin and Suzanne Lloyd

They noted that in Harold Lloyd's movies he always ended up with the girl and in most of the movies he was the underdog.

He was noted for being a perfectionist- even in old age he would watch his movies and talk about how he would redo things.

Lulu's Review

A super cute and sweet movie. I was only able to watch part of the movie because I had to run off to Grauman's Chinese Theatre to stand in line for the showing of Singin' In The Rain.

Singin' In The Rain was shown at 6:30 at Grauman's Chinese Theatre

Singin' in the Rain00245613

Introduced by Robert Osborne and Debbie Reynolds. Patricia Kelly (Gene Kelly's wife) spoke after the movie (unfortunately, I couldn't stay for Patricia's talk, I had to run off to Call Her Savage at The Egyptian Theatre).

Debbie Reynolds was hilarious, boisterous, rambunctious, a real firecracker!

When she was talking about the song Aba Daba Honeymoon that she sang in her movie Two Weeks with Love which references monkeys she said, I didn't know I'd marry them (monkeys).

When preparing for Singin' In The Rain she worked 5 months practising dancing before anyone else showed up on set. She said that they molded her into a great dancer.

In reference to dancing she said, Just tie the tits down and go!

In regards to men she stated, As soon as I undress they all leave.

Talking about Cyd Charisse Debbie said that Cyd had legs longer than her (Debbie's) body.

Lulu's Review

This is my favorite musical. The costumes are fantastic. The songs and the dances are perfect. Donald O'Connor's Make 'Em Laugh dance skit is hilarious, gymnastic and very entertaining. I love the steaminess of  Gene Kelly's dance scene with Cyd Charisse.

Costumes: 10

Humor: 9

Dancing & Singing: 10

Call Her Savage was shown at 9:30 at The Egyptian Theatre

Call her savage

Introduced by David Sten and Katie Trainor

Before Call Her Savage started they showed a short clip of a recently discovered color film featuring Clara Bow dressed in a swimsuit feeding fish to a bird.

When they were talking of Clara they said that she was considered over at the age of 26.

In reference to Call Her Savage they said it was the strangest most perverse pre-code movie.

Lulu's Review

In the beginning of the movie I felt that Clara was being overly dramatic and forcing her character, as the movie went along I was won over by her acting through the tragic events that were piling up in her character's life.

Todd oldham tcm film fest

Todd Oldham was one of the speakers that I was looking forward to hearing from the most at the TCM Classic Film Festival. He is such a talented man of many hats.

When he introduced Auntie Mame you could tell from his speech that he was a kind person.

On Saturday evening when I was heading from the Grauman's Chinese Theatre to The Egyptian Theatre I saw Todd Oldham pass by me coming from The Egyptian Theatre. I asked him if I could take his picture and he said yes, would you like for it to be of the two of us together and I said sure. I tried to take a photo of the two of us standing next to each other with my arm stretched out holding the camera- but, just in case the one of us together didn't turn out I took another photo of just him, the one posted above, which turned out great! He chitchatted with me a little bit while I was taking the photos. He said that he had just come from seeing the movie Gun Crazy.

You know how sometime people will ask you if you could meet anyone and hang out with them who would you want to meet. My top pick so far has been Michel Gondry who I have seen in person and gotten his autograph. He seems shy and nice. Now I would also add Todd Oldham to the list. It would be fascinating to sit and have a drink with either of them because they both obviously have such creative and active minds.

Lulu's Coverage of The 2012 TCM Classic Film Festival Friday, April 13

Posted below are my reviews and summaries of movies that I watched and a lecture that I attended on Friday, April 13th at the TCM Classic Film Festival 2012.

I’m No Angel was shown at 12:30 at the Chinese Multiplex 4

I'm no angel

I'm No Angel is included in the Mae West collection posted above. To purchase it click here

Introduced by Deborah Nadoolman Landis

Travis Banton attended the Arts Students League and then went on to be a designer at Lucille Limited. where Mary Pickford picked out a wedding dress designed by him to wear for her wedding to Douglas Fairbanks.

Travis Banton designed costumes for Claudette Colbert, Marlene Dietrich, Carole Lombard, and Mae West. Travis Banton was designing clothing through the 1960’s.

An interesting tid bit of information is that he was Edith Head’s first boss.

Mae West was 4’ 6” and throughout most of I'm No Angel you see her in long gowns that hide the tall shoes that she would wear.

Lulu’s Review

This movie features Mae West at the top of her form sashaying and sauntering around in form fitting gowns shooting off one liners right and left.

Cary Grant is charming and handsome.

Some of my favorite dress details were the costumes featuring 3-D flower details. Mae wears a sleeveless gown that is adorned with flowers around the arm holes and is matched with flower adorned arm sleeves.

Mae’s character in the movie keeps figurines of animals next to photos of the men her life, each figurine representing that man’s character. The figurines include a skunk and snake.

Vertigo was shown at 6:00 at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre

Vertigo

The ceiling of the Grauman's Chinese Theatre is painted with a Chinese mural and has ornate moulding. There are marble pillars and the walls are red with gold painting. The theatre is massive. The seats have been converted to modern seats with cup holders- but, they don’t look out of place like some I’ve seen at other vintage movie theaters.

Robert Osborne interviewed Kim Novak.

Kim Novak liked working with Hitchcock. She said that he knew when to let you take charge of a character.

Kim said that the grey suit was like a strait jacket, saying that the discomfort was right for the character.

She said she was glad to get to see Vertigo on the big screen.

Lulu’s Review

The black and green evening gown in the restaurant scene in the movie is stunning.

Robert Evans said that Robert Towne is the best writer he has worked with in his entire career.

How apropos to see Chinatown at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles! This movie has great men’s fashions including fedoras, ties and three piece suits. Faye Dunaway has a gorgeous selection of hats.

Lulu's Coverage of The TCM Classic Film Festival Thursday, April 12, 2012

After I finished covering the red carpet for the Cabaret restoration I headed over to the Roosevelt Hotel where they were supposed to show High Society poolside on the rooftop. Unfortunately, it was raining so they brought the movie indoors to Club TCM.

People gathering inside of Club TCM for the High Society showing...

Club TCM High Society 2012-1

Ladies sitting by fabulous sketches of film fashion inside of Club TCM...

Club TCM High Society 2012-4

I was only able to watch a little bit of High Society before I had to run off to a showing of Cleopatra.

The way the festival runs is that there are usually five to seven different movies and events taking place during five different time slots throughout the day at different venues (for example on Saturday of the film festival Singin' In The Rain, Moonstruck, The Black Cat, The Scarlett Empress and Gun Crazy were all showing in the evening during the 6:30/6:45/7:15 time slot).

Cleopatra...

Cleopatra

Photo courtesy of TCM and Photofest.

Deborah Nadoolman Landis and Bob Mackie spoke before Cleopatra was shown.

Bob Mackie said that this is one of his favorite movies. He first saw this movie at a revival theater in the 1950's as a child.

Deborah Nadoolman Landis is having a show in London and one of Colbert's dresses from the movie is going to be on display. Deborah says that in the movie the dress looks white but that in reality it's a mint green.

Travis Banton was the featured fashion designer of the Style in the Movies theme of this year's festival. Travis Banton designed the clothing in Cleopatra. Claudette Colbert refused to wear the designs DeMille originally wanted her to. She insisted that instead of using DeMille's designers that she wanted Banton as her designer, and the rest is fashion history.

Lulu's review:

The Cleopatra costumes are lavish consisting of lame, chain mail, silk, velvet, scarabs and snakes. Colbert's dresses are slinky, sexy and revealing.

Some unusual scenes in the movie are: there are women dressed up as leopards being whipped, women being pulled out of the sea in a net who come slithering out to Marc Antony offering up shells full of pearls and jewels.

TCM Classic Film Festival Round Table Interviews with Ben Mankiewicz & Robert Osborne

This morning I attended the TCM Classic Film Festival Press Day round table interviews with Robert Osborne and Ben Mankiewicz.

The interviews took place at the Library Bar inside of the beautiful historic Roosevelt Hotel. Inside the bar there were two tables set up where the interviews took place. Ben Mankiewicz and Robert Osborne took turns sitting at each of the tables being interviewed.

Ben Mankiewicz sat at our table first.

2012-04-11 TCM Ben Mankiewicz

Ben Mankiewicz was fun and funny during his interview.

When Ben was asked what his favorite part of the TCM Classic Film Festival was, he replied that is was interacting with fans on the street or while at Club TCM.

He says that unlike other cable networks the fans of TCM feel like they need to watch over the network, that they feel a guardianship towards it.

When asked what his most interesting interview was, he said that Mickey Rooney was his most challenging.

Noir films were his entree to the love of classic cinema.

Currently his favorite classic film is The Searchers.

He would like to see the festival focus on Sam Fuller.

He doesn't think that there is a cut off year for classic cinema.

I asked him if he thought that there were any good modern remakes of classic films and he stated that The Thomas Crown Affair and The Getaway were good. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was one of his favorite films of last year.

When talking about the remake of The Thin Man movie that's in the works, he mentioned that he thought that either Jennifer Lawrence or Emma Stone would be good for the role of Nora.

Robert Osborne

2012-04-11 TCM Robert Osborne

Robert Osborne was charming and articulate during his interview.

Robert says that the value of the festival is to see the movie on the big screen and sharing it with an audience. He says that your eyes are riveted on the screen, you're not texting, etc...

He particularly loves movies from the 40's, 50's, and 60's. He said that the factory days were the golden years, and that Ben Hur was kind of the cutoff, the end of an era.

He says that its very hard to do things now in film that haven't been done before. He cited Avatar as something good that hasn't been done before.

When talking about the first TCM Classic Film Festival he said that they had to have marquee films, films that people would recognize.

This year within two hours of the TCM Classic Film Festival Premium Passes going on sale they sold out.

In regards to Style in the Movies he thinks that it's what Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly brought to a movie.

The Guest Programmer series on TCM came about because Stephen Sondheim said if he was ever the programmer he would do this and this. Stephen was not the first to take part in the series though, Bill Cosby was.

When talking about classic film stars such as Doris Day, Olivia de Havilland, Michael Caine, and Sean Connery he said that most of them don't want the attention of being in front of the camera anymore.

Robert Osborne mentioned that at the theaters that he has invested in (which are in Port Townsend, Washington) that they recently received notices from Disney and Fox that as of January 2013 their movies will no longer be released in 35mm film format.

I really enjoyed hearing what these two great film historians had to say. Stay tuned - tomorrow night I'm covering the red carpet for the World Premiere Restoration of Cabaret.

We love this series, it's one of our favorites!

The Avengers series from this era features poor production quality: sometimes you can see the shadow of the cameraman, or someone off camera bumps into something and makes a noise. In Death a la Carte someone is thrown a key and he doesn’t catch it and you can see him smirk before the camera cuts away.

The series feature a snappy jazz soundtrack, lots of guys in cool sunglasses, Steed in 3 piece suits, Mrs. Gayle changing into leather ensembles when it comes time to kick butt. Unusual avant garde as well as lavish sets. Steed especially seems to be having a good time in the series.

Lulu: Overall: 9 I thought that because of the subject matter and it being a drama that it would be slow and not very enticing. On the contrary- it was well paced and easy to become enraptured in the story. The coffee shop owner and the train station attendant are entertaining and funny. There’s an unusual coffee pot in the movie.

Lulu: Overall: 7.5 It was fun to see Vera-Ellen dancing in a movie other than White Christmas. Near the opening the scene where Fred is sitting with all the Belle Epoque ladies is amusing. The Currier & Ives photo shoot is fun. I especially like the costumes in the ice skating scenes.

Chris: Overall: 6 Kind of boring. Dance and songs weren’t too memorable.

January 19

The Thomas Crown Affair 1968

The Thomas Crown Affair

Lulu: Overall: 8.5 The bank robbers at the beginning of the movie look like ska rude boys in their 1960’s suits, hats and dark sunglasses. Faye Dunaway has a great selection of hats. Faye wears short mod dresses and outfits with minimalistic flapper-esque details. They drive around in a dune buggy.

Chris: Overall: 7.5 Fun movie, especially the bank heist and getaway. Enjoyable seeing all of the men’s hats, listening to the music and seeing what was probably considered then the unique multiple frame views. Plenty of cheesiness including chess match and contemplative beach buggy drives.

January 20

Murder With Mirrors 1985

Lulu has seen before (a long time ago).

Murder With Mirrors

Lulu: It was fun watching this movie because Helen Hayes is the Miss Marple I grew up watching. Helen Hayes is teamed with Leo McKern again (they were both in one of my favorite childhood movies Candleshoe). Bette Davis, after her stroke and in one of her last roles, plays the lady of the house. I have been reading a lot of Agatha Christie books lately. I had read the book this movie is based on not too long ago and therefore I recognized some plot elements that they had changed. I didn’t like that in this film it was set in the current day, 1985, instead of the earlier era that the book is from. This has a huge effect on the clothing and interior styles/design. The movie was entertaining in a humorous way (some intended/some unintended). The newer Miss Marple series with period appropriate attire and sets are better.

Chris: No mirrors. Enjoyable but overly dramatic in a Dallas or Falcon Crest way. Great showcase of 80’s fashion. Lulu makes a cameo at the beginning of the film feeding pigeons when she was in England...

Anne-London

What Chris referenced in his review of Murder with Mirrors is that there is a young girl in an opening scene of the movie that looked like me from a photo that he had seen of my visit to London in 1983 (the photo is posted above).

With Six You Get Eggroll 1968

With Six You Get Eggroll

Lulu: Overall: 9 Judging by the cover this movie looked to be a lot of fun. The movie lived up to my expectation of kooky wacky flower power era good times. There’s a dance club scene full of hiply clad young people dancing, and fuzzy stuffed animal marionettes jiggling around. The oldest son in the movie drives a hot rod vintage Ford. George Carlin is a sassy drive in attendant at Ye Olde Drive In. There’s a wacky chase scene where some flower power hippies help Doris Day out of a fix.

Chris: Overall: 8.5 Enjoyable and goofy comedy of the late 60’s. Totally over the top interiors, vibrant, wacky colors. Some highlights include the scene at the club with the band performing, people dancing, and close-ups of marionettes! Also really enjoyed the huge dog, the youngest brother with the constant underbite, the Ye Old Drive-In & George Carlin.

January 26

Murder She Said 1961

We have seen before.

Murder She Said

Lulu: Margaret Rutherford is my favorite of the Miss Marples. She is surprisingly spry, witty, and can go head to head with lively banter. Her facial expressions with her mouth and jiggling jowls are fun. Her male sidekick Mr. Stringer (who was her husband in real life) is cute and he rides around on a three wheel tryke bike. The music is kicky and enjoyable.

Chris: Overall: 9 All four very entertaining (see below for the other three movies in the set). Really enjoy Miss Marple’s character played by Margaret Rutherford and her companion Mr. Stringer with his trike is excellent as well. Even the inspector and other supporting staff is well played. Fun, cheeky humor, and 60’s harpiscord-esque music similar to The Avengers TV series.

The Belle of New York

Lulu: Overall: 8 This movie contains the classic Fred Astaire dance scenes where he dances with a coat rack (seamlessly smooth and suave) and the dance sequence where he dances up the walls and onto the ceiling. This must have been a real spectacle back when it originally aired.

Chris: Overall: 7.5 The plot was entertaining enough. The song/dance numbers were not overly memorable with the exception of Fred Astaire in the gym on the boat and of course his dance routine in his hotel room in which he is dancing on the ceiling and walls- incredibly seamless and entertaining to watch!

Les Enfants du Paradis

Children of paradise 3

Last night I went and saw Les Enfants du Paradis (Children of Paradise). I am a big fan of French cinema, yet I had never seen this classic film before. The film was over three hours in length.

The movie centers around Garance, a woman who is loved by four different men. Frederick, Lacenaire, Baptiste, and Count Eduard of Monteray. Garance only truly loves one of the men, Baptiste, the mime. Baptiste is tragically beautiful in not only the way that he looks, but as well as in the way that he moves and behaves.

Children of paradise 2

The movie's ending tears at your heart. I left the theater with dampened red eyes, and a woman who was walking behind me was sobbing.

Les Enfants du Paradis is a masterpiece for the heart and soul.

An interesting thing to note is that this movie was filmed during the Nazi occupation of France.

Cry Baby & 1950's Fashion

Cry baby

The other night Chris and I went and watched Cry Baby at a local movie theater.
I saw this movie when it first came out back in 1990 with my friend and her mom. I have watched the movie since then- but, only on the small screen. So, it was a real treat to see this fun campy adventure on the big screen again. The night we went and saw the movie my outfit for the evening was part drape and part square. The square part of my ensemble was my full skirt (Traci Lord's character Wanda states "I wouldn't be caught dead in a full skirt") and the drape part of my ensemble was my seamed black fishnet tights, black eyeliner and deep red lipstick. Being a fan of 1950's fashion I enjoy both the full skirted look and the wiggle dress. I highly recommend going out and renting Cry Baby and relishing in it's fashion, comedy, drama and musical sequences!

Jacques Tati's Trafic

Trafic

Last night Chris and I went and saw Trafic atop the Hotel deLuxe's parking garage. The film is one of a series of films shown each summer atop the parking garage by the NW Film Center. The atmosphere at these events is always fun and enjoyable. There is live music and there are great views of sunset/dusk lit buildings.
1971's Trafic is about a camping van that Monsieur Hulot has designed and has to take from Paris to Amerstdam for a car show. There are all sorts of fun antics and thoughtful imagery in this movie. For the fashion lover there is the smart wardrobe of Maria, The Public Relation Representative to drool over. Maria drives a sporty little yellow convertible in which she changes outfits, she evens stores her hats in the spare tire compartment (click here to watch a clip that features this scene)!

The Great Gabbo

Gabbo

I find ventriloquist dummies to be quite creepy, and I enjoy relishing in their creepiness while watching old TV programs like The Twilight Zone episode "The Dummy" or movies like the one we watched last night, The Great Gabbo, a film in which Erich von Stroheim stars as "The Great Gabbo", a mad and talented ventriloquist who performs with his dummy "Otto". In the movie Gabbo can't express his feelings to the song and dance girl that he loves, so Otto does the talking for him. Besides the creepy yet sweet Otto, the movie also features fantastic costumes in the musical numbers, and a cool spider web set in the Caught in the Web of Love segment (this segment must have been the basis for the sassy and entertaining Joi Lansing Web of Love Scopitone video).

Greta Garbo in Mata Hari & Four Fabulous Faces

Matahari1

Some people share their birthday with Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn or Myrna Loy, I share mine with Mata Hari. I never really knew much about her other than she was a femme fatale spy.

Last night we watched the 1931 Mata Hari movie which stars Greta Garbo. This film is loosely based on Mata Hari's life. Garbo plays such a mesmerizing version of Mata Hari that you don't really care if it's accurate or not. This movie had me gasping with amazement at some of the lavish, decadent over the top outfits that Garbo was wearing including an outfit that involved intriguing gold lame leggings or tights (you can check out a film clip featuring the ensemble on You Tube, look closely at how sensuously she closes the curtains towards the end of the clip [Garbo's gowns were designed by Adrian]). Greta Garbo's beauty and talent shine in this movie.

Speaking of the beauty of Garbo, I was lucky enough to come across an incredible hardback book titled Four Fabulous Faces, which contains tons of photos of Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford and Gloria Swanson. I have only just begun ogling this weighty tome, and so far it proves to be fascinating.

For any Silver Screen and Old Hollywood fan I would most definitely recommend watching Mata Hari and reading Four Fabulous Faces.

The Plot Against Harry

Harry

Last night we watched 1969's The Plot Against Harry

The movie starts out suddenly with no intro other than the name of the movie on the screen. It's about Harry, a Jewish numbers racketeer, who gets out of jail and goes about trying to make good with his life. Other than reading the description on the back of the movie we knew nothing of it and were surprised by it's unusual cinematography. I was trying to remember what movie it reminded me of when Chris said it reminded him of 1984's Stranger Than Paradise, and that was the movie I was trying to think of- so, the cinematography style is Stranger Than Paradise with some of 2001's The Royal Tenenbaums thrown in for good measure.

Vintage Buster Keaton Movies

Buster

Chris and I have been watching quite a lot of Buster Keaton movies lately.
His movies are always guaranteed to make us laugh, and I find Buster to be so handsome in his old silent films!
Two fun ones that we watched recently were Seven Chances and Balloonatic.
The image at the top of this post is a scan of an Artist Trading Card that Chris made. The image of Buster Keaton is from old black and white movie wrapping paper that I have, Chris cut out the inner shirt area and collaged a vintage wine label underneath and then glued it onto a more modern background image.

The Pink Panther

Pinkpanther

As a kid I was always watching reruns of old movies on t.v. I really thought the Pink Panther series was funny- but, I don't think that I saw the original Pink Panther movie until I was in my twenties.

1963's The Pink Panther has everything you could want to help keep you entertained: the hilarious Peter Sellers, the dashing David Niven, a young Robert Wagner, the classical beauty Capucine, the pouty Claudia Cardinale, elegant costumes for Capucine and Claudia Cardinale by Yves Saint-Laurent, a catchy and entertaining musical performance by Fran Jeffries (who I think Lady Miss Kier of Deee-lite bears a strong resemblance to), and a costume party filled with over the top costumes!

Mon Oncle

Mon_oncle

The other night we were delighted by the movie Mon Oncle.
Jacques Tati portrays a man who lives a happy life in the perfectly imperfect traditional Paris which is juxtaposed against the imperfectly perfect modern Paris that his sister, brother-in-law and nephew live in.
The movie features many funny and amusing scenes, and also offers up an intriguing critique of traditional Parisian life compared to modern Parisian life.
Besides starring in Mon Oncle, Jacques Tati also was the movie's writer, director and producer!
The d.v.d that we rented also included the short Jacques Tati movie L'Ecole des Facteurs which also proved to be a delight.

A Christmas Carol

Cc

Christmas Carol is a true holiday classic that I grew up watching on t.v. during Christmas time.

My husband and I watched it the other night, and that was the first time I had seen it in a long time, perhaps the first time I had seen it in my adult life.

Alastair Sim's Scrooge is full of bah humbug until he is greeted in the middle of the night by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley who warns him to change his greedy selfish ways and informs Scrooge that he will receive visits from three ghosts during the middle of the night.

A fun treat for Avengers fans is Patrick Macnee's performance as the young Jacob Marley.

The copy of Christmas Carol that we rented also included an animated version of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer that was a fun little treat to watch.

Why Change Your Wife?

Why

We recently watched 1920's Why Change Your Wife?
Why Change Your Wife stars Gloria Swanson as Beth Gordon.
Beth is a prim old fashioned sort of wife who nags her husband Robert Gordon (
Thomas Meighan) about various different things.
Robert buys Beth a fabulous negligee in the hopes of making her into more of what he is interested in- and she refuses to wear it.
Robert then turns his affections towards the flapperish delights of Sally Clark (Bebe Daniels).
But, oh... how Beth gets her revenge!
The costumes are wonderful in this movie- especially the aforementioned negligee- which I would love to find a version of!

Vintage Movie Love

My husband and I are total vintage movie fanatics!
A couple of years ago I asked for and received  Leonard Maltin's Classic Movie Guide for Christmas. I have now read the entire book- all 686 pages of it!
I marked in the book any and all movies that I was interested in. I even started an alphabetized notebook of movies that we could take to the movie store and look at as a reference as to what to watch. Each entry I color coded to denote what genre it was. That way if we were in the mood for a Foreign movie or a Horror/Sci-Fi/B Movie we would be able to scan the page and find it.
Well, tonight is a perfect night to watch a Horror/Sci-Fi/B Movie!
My husband and I had originally planned on watching a movie that I had rented from the library titled Fiend Without A Face- but, instead we found out about a showing of Nosferatu, Voyage to the Moon and The Golden Bug all of which will feature live musical accompaniment- so, we are planning on heading out to watch those rather than staying in and watching our movie rental.
If you are feeling up for an entertaining and amusing movie rental for the evening check out...
1962's The Day of the Triffids

I must say, I'm an expert at making Triffid noises- which totally freaks my husband out!

There are eight lobby cards altogether up for auction over on eBay for the "Buy It Now" price of $239.99

Devil Music Enemble 2008 Tour

Dme

This past Saturday night my husband and I went to a screening of the 1929 silent Chinese Kung Fu movie Red Heroine with musical accompaniment by the Devil Music Ensemble.

This was our second time hearing the Devil Music Ensemble providing a soundtrack for a silent movie (the first time was back in 2005 when they were touring with their soundtrack for 1922's Nosferatu) and only one word can sum up the experience- EXHILARATING!!!

Nothing can match the cinematic experience of a live band accompanying a silent movie!

You must go and see the Devil Music Ensemble and Red Heroine, here is a list of their tour dates:

Bed and Sofa & Chess Fever

I love to watch old movies and my favorite place to check them out is at the library.
I'll head into the library not knowing if they will have any movies that I am interested in or not and most of the time I will find at least one movie that is of interest to me.
Over the past month or so I have had great luck finding cinema classics!
I recently checked out several vintage French movies, some American movies, a Greek movie and a Russian movie.
Last night my husband and I watched the Russian movie Bed and Sofa (Tretya Meshchanskaya) which was released in 1927.

    Bed_and_sofa

Bed and Sofa is an interesting movie about a married couple who live in a basement apartment.
The husband Kolia is goofy and doesn't appreciate his wife Liuda and all the work she does around their apartment.
One day the husband's friend Volodia comes for a visit, he sleeps on their couch and ends up getting a job as a printer at the local newspaper.
Kolia goes out of town on a business trip and is gone for a week.
While he is gone the handsome Volodia courts Liuda and wins her over.
When Kolia comes home from his business trip guess where he ends up sleeping!?!
Liuda eventually finds out she's pregnant- but, who is the father?
This film deals with controversial issues, especially for the time when it was released.

Along with the movie Bed and Sofa is a short film called Chess Fever (Shakhmatnaya Goryachka) which was released in 1925.
Around the time Chess Fever was released there was a wave of chess mania sweeping Russia and this movie is a parody of that mania.
Chess Fever features as the lead the same actor who played Volodia in Bed and Sofa.
The main character is obsessed with chess.
He neglects his fiancee, who is not at all interested in chess.
Eventually he decides to give up chess for her only to find out that she has had a change of heart about chess.
Chess Fever is an incredibly entertaining and amusing film!
You can watch the entire movie over on Google
